The IAU encourages the use of special accented characters in many names. The corresponding IAU name (if any) is given in lower case, as is the nature of the discrepancy (in parenthesis). The following names in the VMA database (shown in CAPITAL LETTERS) do not conform to current IAU standards. The data were corrected to the intended values before checking against the IAU database in the following printouts. The cells representing longitude, latitude (and data following that) for the following features are offset to the right in the database spreadsheet causing an erroneous readout and a failure to display in VMA. The DATALUN database released with "VMA Pro 5" on Decemappears to contain the same errors listed here, and does not appear to include any of the IAU's newly-named features in the Moon's polar regions. Christian Legrand (the author of the VMA database) was informed of these problems. Please note: the following lists were prepared by Jim Mosher based on an automated comparison of downloads of the two databases. None of those possible errors are listed here. In addition to the possible problems related to feature names, positions and sizes, there are many other potential errors in the database fields devoted to other topics. Some of the discrepancies listed here (particularly the positional differences) may be intentional. Some of the discrepancies arise because the categories in this range include "Dome" and "Dome system", which are not name categories recognized as such by the IAU. The database used is the one distributed with VMA Pro 4.0. The following page presents lists of discrepancies for the VMA database categories "Crater"."Bay" (as listed in VMA's DATALUN window). ![]() Some users of the highly popular Virtual Moon Atlas may find it helpful to be aware of certain discrepancies that exist between its internal database of lunar feature names and the values listed in the more widely accepted IAU Planetary Gazetteer.
